MIAMI, Okla. – Three Miami city police officers involved in a turnpike shooting that left two people dead – have been cleared of any wrongdoing.

Miami Police Chief Stephen Sigmon told us today that District Attorney Doug Pewitt cleared his officers, and they are back to work.

Pewitt says based on the report from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, the officers’ actions were justified.

The two people who died in that shooting were Lexi Scheets, 35, of Willard and Jason Moore, 45 of Columbia. They were killed June 16 near the Miami Welcome Center on the Will Rogers Turnpike.

Sigmon says the report does not say who fired the bullet or bullets that killed Scheets. The OSBI says that portion of the case is still under investigation.

Officers say Moore was driving a stolen Jeep when he picked Scheets up in the parking lot of Downstream Casino. It was an officer with the Quapaw Nation Marshal Service who followed Moore onto the turnpike and attempted to pull him over.

That officer reported that he believed it was a hostage situation and that said Moore fired shots at him as he was chasing him.

In a report released by Pewitt on the day of the shooting around 9 a.m., Moore had reportedly fired a weapon from this blue Jeep Commander, and the vehicle was stopped at the Welcome Center parking lot.

Moore was holding Scheets around the neck and had a “gun pointed at her head,” according to the report.

Several officers yelled at Moore to drop the gun, the report states.

The report states Moore began backing over the concrete center barrier, dragging Scheets over with him.

Gunshots were fired, and the report states Scheets was lying on her back with the top part of her head opened, which exposed brain matter. Moore was on his stomach, handcuffed, and his head covered in blood, the report states.

Both Moore and Scheets were deceased.

The FBI and U.S. Attorney’s office are also involved in the investigation. We’ll bring you more details as soon as the report is made available.
