PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — A Port St. Lucie High School football player has spent more than a week in the St. Lucie County Jail on an immigration detainer, after a traffic stop for speeding through a school zone put him on federal immigration enforcement’s radar.

According to a St. Lucie County traffic citation, Port St. Lucie Police Officer C. Daigneault clocked 18-year-old Emmanuel Nelson driving 45 miles per hour in a 20-mile-per-hour school zone on Southeast Lennard Road the morning of Aug. 19. Nelson was stopped near Southeast Grand Drive and Southeast Union Park Drive and cited for unlawful speed in a school zone, the citation shows. It is a civil infraction that does not require a court appearance.

In a statement, an ICE spokesman described Nelson as an immigrant from Haiti living in the country illegally and said he was arrested by local law enforcement Aug. 22, three days after the date on his traffic citation, during what the agency called an enforcement operation, before being transferred to ICE custody. ICE said Nelson entered the United States legally on Jan. 16, 2016, but later violated the terms of his admission, and that he remains in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.

ICE’s statement also pointed to the agency’s push for self deportation, telling immigrants in the country illegally that the government is offering money and a flight home through its CBP Home app, and warning of arrest and removal for those who do not take the offer.

On the football field, Nelson is a rising senior on the Port St. Lucie High School defense, according to comments head coach Everette Alford made in May. Nelson played in the Aug. 14 Kickoff Classic against Fort Pierce Central High School, five days before he was cited and taken into custody.
