The iconic two-piece band concept conjures the picture of idealized rock rawness. But The Imposters — a staggeringly high-functioning duo who’ve collaborated with King Crimson’s Tony Levin, Zappa, Porcupine Tree, Stereolab and Natalie Merchant Band — shatter that image.
Much of it is through their use of the Chapman Stick — a marvel of an instrument played by fretboard tapping that handles melodies, chords and bass lines all at once. (Take that, Eddie Van Halen.) With the Chapman Stick and a sense of daring, The Imposters tap untold dimensions with improv-heavy excursions that push prog-rock to jazz heights.
