SUNRISE, Fla. (CBS12) — A South Florida U.S. Border Patrol arrest helped unravel the mystery of hundreds of cinnamon rolls that had been missing for days when they didn’t make it to a farmers market.
Ivan Dario Rico Molano was arrested Saturday during a traffic stop by Border Patrol, according to the agency. A spokesperson told WPLG Molano, a Colombian citizen, admitted he was in the United States without legal authorization.
Records show he entered the country legally in May 2021 but remained after his authorized period of stay expired.
Around the same time, Julie Pierre, the 21-year-old owner of Roll and Dough Bakery in Sunrise, was trying to figure out what happened to about $3,000 worth of cinnamon rolls she had sent to a farmers market with an Uber courier.
Pierre initially believed the courier had stolen the pastries and reported them missing to the Sunrise Police Department. The story later went viral on social media.

But the cinnamon rolls had apparently never left the vehicle.
Pierre told WPLG that after Molano’s arrest, a family member picked up his vehicle. The cinnamon rolls remained inside the containers and were not discovered until days later, when the person who had picked up the vehicle realized they were there.
Pierre said police were believed to have contacted the family about the vehicle.
By then, Pierre said she wasn’t willing to risk anyone eating the pastries and threw them away.
Pierre has since confirmed that Uber fully reimbursed her for the lost profits from the pastries.
