SPECIAL TO FLORIDA WEEKLY

Suzanne Barton -LEGENDS RADIO / COURTESY PHOTO

This week’s Legends Radio Local Artist Spotlight shines on photographer Suzanne Barton.

Barton has had a lifelong love of photography, as well as a deep affinity for the water. Her passion for both eventually inspired her to create her Underwater Fine Art Series, an extraordinary body of work that captures movement, beauty, and emotion from an entirely different perspective.

Her photographs also offer a unique perspective on the cultural arts, presenting movement and artistic expression through the ever-changing lens of water. The result is photography unlike what we typically see. Underwater, movement becomes fluid and weightless, light shifts in unexpected ways, and Barton’s subjects seem suspended between reality and imagination.

Her work celebrates not only the beauty of water, but also its emotional effect on us. Barton is particularly inspired by the idea of the “blue mind”—the peaceful, restorative state many people experience when they are near or immersed in water. Through her photographs, she hopes to bring a little of that tranquility to the viewer.

Her unique artistic approach has reached audiences far beyond South Florida. In 2015, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines commissioned Barton to create pieces for “Harmony of the Seas.” Today, her photography also serves another purpose—encouraging people to think about the health and future of our waters.

By combining fine art with environmental awareness, Barton reminds us just how extraordinary the world beneath the surface can be and why preserving its beauty matters. Seeing Barton’s photography helps us view it from a completely different perspective and appreciate it a little more.

That’s why Suzanne Barton is this week’s Legends Radio Local Artist Spotlight.
