OVIEDO, Fla. — Members of the Oviedo City Council are preparing to discuss whether to keep using Flock license plate reader cameras during a work session Monday night.
At their last regular City Council meeting, city leaders asked for a resolution to be brought back that would end Oviedo’s use of the cameras. The issue is expected to be voted on when they meet again on Sept. 10.
Mayor Megan Sladek said this could be the last chance for Flock representatives to address concerns from council members and residents about surveillance and data access.
“A lot of it comes with not knowing how many people can access the data and what criteria apply to people who may be using data pulled from our cameras for purposes in their jurisdictions,” Sladek said.
Sladek said representatives from Flock are expected to attend the work session.
“We’re expecting some good technical answers directly from the company, and there will be public comment,” Sladek said. “So, if anybody wants to bring additional information for us to consider, we’re open to all of that input.”
In February, Oviedo installed eight Flock cameras at entrance and exit points in the city as part of a five-year, $128,000 lease agreement with Flock.
Spectrum News reached out to Flock for comment but has not received a response.
Monday’s work session begins at 5:30 p.m. at Oviedo City Hall.
