Alligator on I-95 leads to Florida woman being killed in I-95 hit-and-run crash

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — An alligator in the roadway on Florida’s I-95 led to a deadly three-vehicle hit-and-run crash after a driver was ejected and struck by another passing vehicle.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol crash report, a 2010 Mercedes-Benz was traveling south on I-95 about 11:52 p.m. Sunday when its driver saw an alligator in the roadway. The driver was unable to avoid it, and the front left side of the Mercedes-Benz struck the alligator.

A driver in a 2004 Toyota Tacoma then swerved to avoid the Mercedes-Benz, lost control and overturned, ejecting the driver from the pickup truck.

A third vehicle traveling south on I-95 struck the driver, who was in the roadway, and fled the scene. The Toyota driver, a 20-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash report said she was not wearing a seat belt.

The 58-year-old Mercedes-Benz driver remained at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
