TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A Florida State University student who was shot after a gunman opened fire on campus last year in April is suing the university, according to recent court records.
WCTV obtained the court papers dated August 31, which reveal that FSU student Madison Askins is suing Florida State, alleging it did not make sure its students were safe.
Specifically, the legal document states she was shot “due to inadequate and negligent security on the subject premises.”
Askins was injured during the shooting last year while trying to run from the accused shooter Phoenix Ikner after he opened fire on FSU’s campus inside and outside the Student Union in April 2025, the court documents show.
The shooting claimed the lives of two men and left several others injured.

The lawsuit claims Askins has permanent injuries from the shooting and was hospitalized shortly after. Furthermore, the court documents said her injuries impacted a pre-existing condition she has.
The student’s lawsuit comes just a day after the family of Robert Morales, one of the victims killed in the tragic 2025 shooting rampage at FSU, filed a federal suit seeking to hold OpenAI accountable for his death.
The trial for Ikner was set to begin Oct. 19, but is now scheduled for June 8, 2027, per court documents.
