STUART, Fla. (CBS12) — A former Treasure Coast Hospice employee is facing grand theft charges after Stuart police say she stole two rings from a patient while working as a certified nursing assistant on loan for the day.

Police identified the suspect as 38-year-old Latoya Morrine Moye of Fort Pierce. Stuart Police Chief Flamur Zenelovic said Moye was working with the patient at Treasure Coast Hospice on Aug. 12 when the rings went missing. The patient’s family noticed the same day and notified hospice staff and law enforcement.

Staff quickly identified Moye as the suspect, but she denied the allegations, according to Zenelovic. Detectives spent about a week investigating before tracking down one of the rings at a pawn shop.

“One of the rings looked like it was pawned at a pawn shop on Gatlin Boulevard in the city of Port St. Lucie,” Zenelovic said.

Investigators say surveillance video captured Moye pawning the ring the day after it went missing. A detective interviewed Moye a second time, and she again denied taking the rings. Not long after that interview, the detective returned to the pawn shop to collect additional evidence, and Moye showed up at the same location, unannounced, while he was still inside. The two spoke briefly, and Moye left shortly after, according to police.

Stuart police issued a warrant for her arrest that day. St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Moye on Aug. 31. She bonded out of the St. Lucie County Jail on a $10,000 bond the same day.

Moye is charged with third-degree grand theft. The second ring has not been recovered.

Zenelovic said he has no information that this has happened elsewhere, calling it an isolated incident. He said he has alerted Port St. Lucie police in case Moye is connected to any thefts in that area.

In a statement, Treasure Coast Hospice said it reported the matter to Stuart police as soon as it became aware of the issue and that the employee involved is no longer with the organization.

“Treasure Coast Hospice takes the trust our patients and families place in us extremely seriously. We recently became aware of an incident involving a staff member and a patient’s personal property. Upon learning of this, we immediately reported the matter to the Stuart Police Department. The staff member involved is no longer employed with our organization. We are fully cooperating with the investigation and, out of respect for its integrity and the privacy of those involved, are unable to share further details at this time.
