PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — The Port St. Lucie Police Department is announcing an operational pause on the use of all Automated License Plate Reader technology, widely recognized as Flock cameras, according to a press release from the Port St. Lucie Police Department.
PSLPD’s announcement comes in light of FDOT’s memorandum regarding the revoking of permits for ALPR systems on state roads. During the pause, PSLPD says that ALPR access will be limited exclusively to “exigent circumstances” regarding immediate threat to human life, or in circumstances in which access to ALPR information may help prevent the loss of life or threat to great bodily harm.
Police Chief Leo Niemczyk weighed in on the decision to remove pause the use of ALPR technology.

“This is a dedicated balance. On one hand, we have a technology that has proven to be an important tool for our officers and investigators and has helped us protect people and solve crimes,” he said. “On the other, we have a responsibility to listen to our community, respect the direction of our state leaders, and ensure our policies reflect the highest standards of trust, accountability, and public safety. We are committed to finding that balance and doing what is right for the people we serve.”
PSLPD says it will continue to monitor developments at the state level and review any additional guidance as it becomes available.
