A traffic enforcement detail in Tampa, Florida, nearly turned into something much worse when police say a reckless teenage driver came dangerously close to members of the department’s motor unit. Whatever decision put him in that situation apparently happened fast enough to leave officers talking about just how close things came.
The Tampa Police Department said the incident happened during enhanced enforcement through its Enhanced Law Enforcement Engagement program. Officers described the driver only as being in his mid-teens, but said his actions were serious enough to result in one felony and three misdemeanor charges.
Police did not provide a full breakdown of those charges in the post, nor did they explain every detail of what happened before the close call. What they did make clear was that the department viewed the driving as reckless and dangerous enough to put officers and other people on the road at risk.
The department used the encounter as a reminder for drivers to slow down, move over, and make safer decisions behind the wheel. In this case, Tampa police summed up the consequences pretty simply: a teenage mistake ended with what they called “adult consequences.”

The clip features a few officers talking to one another before switching over to a different officer’s body camera as he pursues a vehicle on the highway. The officer is on a motorcycle and had already tried stopping the other vehicle before he ultimately crashed into another driver.
Even after doing that, the driver still didn’t stop, prompting the officer to step off the bike and try to manually apprehend the suspect. However, the suspect took this as an opportunity to speed away.
Fortunately, the suspect didn’t get very far, as other officers were able to track him down and put him in handcuffs, ending the chase. According to the officer in the video, he was arrested for fleeing to elude and fleeing a traffic crash.
The suspect actually seemed pretty shocked at the consequences, which makes the whole ordeal even stranger.
Comments and Reactions to the Tampa Teen Driver
A lot of commenters wanted more details than the department’s short post provided, especially about the charges and what happened during the encounter. One person asked how many cars the teen had wrecked and what he was charged with, while another wanted to know what kind of sentence could potentially come from the case.
Others focused on what could be heard or seen in the video itself, including one commenter asking about an officer’s remark that the passenger was “lucky” to be wearing a mask. Another questioned why an officer did not continue following the driver, showing that viewers were picking apart the response just as much as the teen’s actions.
There were also some side conversations about officer safety, with one commenter criticizing the motor officers for wearing short sleeves and open-faced helmets and telling them to “put some gear on.” Another simply summed up the whole clip with “Unusual Suspects,” which, given how many questions the short video apparently raised, feels pretty fitting.
