MIAMI, Fla. — Sept. 2, 2026 — Miami Dade College (MDC) will host a special community celebration at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, at the Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center (MEEC) to unveil a historical marker honoring the life and legacy of Congresswoman Carrie P. Meek and commemorate the Center’s recent designation by the Florida Civil Rights Museum. The event will also feature a ceremonial check presentation from Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson, recognizing continued investments in education and community advancement.
“Congresswoman Carrie P. Meek was a trailblazer who opened doors that had too often been closed to others,” said MDC President Madeline Pumariega. “Her courage, leadership and unwavering commitment to South Florida and Miami Dade College helped change the course of our community. This historical marker is a lasting reminder of the difference one determined leader can make—and of the responsibility we have to carry that spirit of service forward.”
The unveiling of the historical marker will honor Congresswoman Meek’s lifelong commitment to public service, educational opportunity, economic empowerment and advocacy for underserved communities. A pioneering educator and legislator, Meek broke barriers throughout her distinguished career and left an indelible mark on South Florida and the nation.
Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, who has continued the tradition of championing educational and economic opportunities throughout South Florida, will participate in the ceremony and present a commemorative check supporting ongoing community-focused initiatives.
Community leaders, elected officials, educators, students, alumni and residents are expected to attend the celebration honoring a transformational leader whose impact continues to shape generations.
