A teen accused of stabbing two classmates at Miami Northwestern Senior High School appeared in court Tuesday as the injured students continued to recover.
According to Miami Fire Rescue, crews responded at around 12:30 p.m. Monday to the area near the school after receiving reports of an altercation.
An 18-year-old was found with a stab wound while a 15-year-old suffered a laceration to his hand.
Both were hospitalized in stable condition.
Cellphone video shows two people appearing to team up as they attack a student in a hallway before that student appears to go after them.
The video doesn’t make it clear who the suspects and the victims are in the incident.
One student said the stabbing was in self-defense.
“My friend, they jumped him and when they jumped him, he stabbed them back in self defense,” the student said.
A 15-year-old was arrested in the incident and appeared before a judge on Tuesday, where he was ordered to stay under house arrest with an ankle monitor.
After the hearing, the teen’s father spoke.
“They spent a few days mistreating and threatening my son and this is the outcome,” the father said in Spanish.
The teen is due back in court in a few weeks.
“Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is aware of an incident involving students at one of our high schools. The matter was immediately addressed by the school’s administration and the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department, subsequently resulting in criminal charges,” the district said in a statement Monday. “The District takes the safety and well-being of our students and staff very seriously and remains committed to maintaining a secure school environment for all.”
