JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 66-year-old Georgia man is facing multiple felony charges after he allegedly impersonated another person to steal $60,000 from a Jacksonville bank — then returned weeks later to try to take even more.
William Humphries, of Savannah was arrested Monday by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and booked into the Pretrial Detention Facility.
What happened at the bank
According to the arrest report, officers were first called to a bank on Jacksonville’s Southside on Aug. 21. The branch manager told police that the bank’s fraud department had flagged a $60,000 loss tied to a transaction that occurred on July 28, 2026.
A suspect had entered the branch, presented himself as an account holder and used that person’s personal information — including a driver’s license — to withdraw $20,000 in cash and obtain a $40,000 cashier’s check.
Suspect returned weeks later
Police were called back to the same branch on Aug. 31, after the suspect allegedly returned and requested an additional $15,000 from the same Home Equity Line of Credit account.
A bank teller told officers that a man called the branch around 1:15 p.m. from a private number, identifying himself as the account holder and asking about the balance on the HELOC account. She said she recognized the name from an internal fraud alert and tried to get a callback number, but the caller hung up.
About 15 minutes later, the suspect walked into the branch and approached her counter. He told her he wanted $15,000 to remodel his kitchen. She said she stalled for time — making small talk and even retrieving the cash from the vault — while police were on the way.
Another bank employee said she recognized the suspect from a previous incident and from internal fraud alerts when she spotted him walking through the parking lot. She told investigators that between their location and several other bank branches, the account now carried $158,000 in outstanding withdrawals against a $175,000 limit.
Suspect identified by fingerprints: JSO
Officers detained Humphries at the counter when they arrived. When asked his name, he identified himself as the account holder. A fingerprint check revealed his true identity, and he then admitted who he was.
Humphries was taken to the State Attorney’s Office where he was interviewed by detectives. Investigators say he admitted to the Aug. 31 withdrawal attempt, as well as attempts to deposit fraudulent checks at banks in Jacksonville and Savannah.
A Mississippi driver’s license bearing the account holder’s name and information was seized as evidence, according to Humphries’ arrest report.
Charges
Humphries faces five felony charges, including:
Defraud to obtain property valued at $50,000 or more
Defraud a financial institution through false pretenses (one count committed, one attempted)
Possess/use fictitious personal identification information
