Online retail behemoth Amazon is looking to hire about 1,500 employees in the Tampa market as part of a national hiring spree ahead of the holiday shopping season.

In all, the company plans to hire 13,500 in the state and 250,000 nationwide.

Amazon says the jobs will be both temporary and permanent with an average wage of $19 per hour for seasonal workers and $23 per hour for full-time workers.

The company shared the news in an announcement Tuesday as it prepares for the busiest shopping time of the year and says it is looking to fill positions across its fulfillment and transportation network.

New jobs, it says in the statement, will be posted on its website weekly between now and December. But, Amazon warns, the positions fill quickly, so candidates should check back often.

While the company says it is adding 1,500 employees in the metro Tampa market, the number is likely to be much higher once the entire region is considered.

However, it is unclear just how many jobs will open up along the remainder of the Gulf Coast, including Pasco and Polk counties. A company spokesman, in an email, says the company doesn’t have job breakdowns for those areas.

Amazon currently operates 30 fulfillment and sortation centers in Florida.

The company does not break down the details of where those are by location, but a database kept by MWPVL International, a Montreal-based global supply and logistics consulting firm that tracks Amazon, shows that there are eight along the Gulf Coast as of early this year.

(MWPVL says on its site that the information provided is “to the best of our knowledge.”)
