MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (September 3, 2026) – Lubbock Christian University opened play at the Barry Invitational on Thursday with a 25-17, 25-19, 25-17 loss to No. 1 St. Cloud State at the Health & Sports Center in Miami Shores, Florida.
The Lady Chaparrals fell to 3-2, while the Huskies improved to 5-0. The match marked LCU’s first contest on Florida soil and its first against a nationally ranked No. 1 opponent during the program’s NCAA era.
St. Cloud State hit .303 with 50 kills, while holding LCU to 23 kills and a .148 attack percentage. The Huskies also finished with eight service aces and 47 digs.
Leigh Jespersen led LCU offensively with seven kills and added six digs. Camryn Blair followed with four kills, while Kayson Reeves recorded three kills, three block assists and two of LCU’s three service aces.
Camdyn Sears finished with 17 assists, six digs and two block assists. Sienna Cavalier led the Lady Chaps with eight digs.
LCU briefly took a 10-9 lead in the second set following a seven-of-eight-point run highlighted by consecutive Reeves aces, but St. Cloud State answered with four straight points and eventually pulled away.
Freshmen Shaylee Stevens and Chloe Crider made their collegiate debuts in the third set. Stevens converted both of her attack attempts for two kills.
All five of LCU’s matches this season have been decided in straight sets.
Game Notes
» The contest was LCU volleyball’s first-ever game on Florida soil. Also, a big altitude difference at 7-feet sea level, as LCU’s previous four games were played at over 7,700-feet in Gunnison, Colo. Barry’s venue is the sixth-closest NCAA venue, that hosts volleyball, to sea level (third closes in Division II, as Eckerd leads Div. II and Tulane leads all divisions at 2.5 feet).
» The match was LCU’s first-ever match against a nationally ranked No.1 program in their NCAA era and the first game against a No.1 program since Sept. 22, 2012, when they fell 3-1 to UT Brownsville/Texas Southmost College (NAIA) in Lubbock. LCU opens the season 0-1 against nationally ranked opponents.
» Freshmen Shaylee Stevens and Chloe Crider each made their collegiate debut. Stevens entered in the third set and had two kills on two attempts.
» The loss was LCU’s first neutral site loss of the season (3-1 in neutral site matches).
» Of LCU’s 3-2 record, all five matches have been straight-set results.

How It Happened
SET 1 | SCSU 25, LCU 17
– Camryn Blair recorded two early kills, and the Lady Chaps used a Kayson Reeves–Camdyn Sears block assist to pull within 6-5 after SCSU had built a 5-2 lead.
– Leigh Jespersen put down three kills during the next stretch, and kills by Sears and Blair brought the Lady Chaps to 14-11 before SCSU moved to 17-11 with a service error and consecutive Abby Wachal kills (she had five in the set).
– Reeves’ kill and an SCSU attack error trimmed the margin to 18-14, but SCSU scored four straight points to move ahead 22-14 and finished the set 25-17 on an Alexis Heinle kill.
SET 2 | SCSU 25, LCU 19
– SCSU moved ahead 8-3 early, with Hannah Bruskiewicz contributing three kills during the opening stretch.
– The Lady Chaps won seven of the next eight points to move in front 10-9, getting a Jespersen kill before Reeves served back-to-back aces to tie the set and provided the Lady Chaps a brief lead.
– SCSU answered with four straight points to go ahead 13-10, and the Lady Chaps stayed within range behind kills from Aubree Lundberg, Jade Workman and Reeves before reaching 17-15.
– SCSU took six of seven points from there to build a 23-16 lead, and Bruskiewicz closed the set with a kill for a 25-19 finish.
SET 3 | SCSU 25, LCU 17
– The set stayed even through the opening stretch, with Stevens, Hope Gonsioroski and Jespersen recording kills before Ramsey Clark’s ace tied it at 9-9.
– SCSU stayed in front through a sideout-heavy middle stretch, moving ahead 16-15 behind kills from Shelby Kimm, Brynn Panek and Carlie Willis.
– Braya LaPlant’s serve produced five straight SCSU points from 17-15 to 22-15, including four aces and a Willis kill.
– The Lady Chaps got late points on SCSU attack errors, but a Kinsey Mohwinkle kill, a Lady Chaps service error and a Mollie Hobson ace closed the set at 25-17.- Reeves and Camdyn Sears co-led LCU in the set with three kills.
– The Huskies had six aces in the third set.
