Tyrant Trump’s desperate attempt to control vote-by-mail by restricting the U.S Postal Service, a federal agency, from delivering legal mail is a blatant end run around the states’ constitutional rights on conducting elections.

Thankfully, no requirement exists to use USPS for voting by mail. Florida law (Ch. 101.62) clearly states that vote-by-mail ballots may be picked up in person or by a voter’s immediate family member from any Supervisor of Elections office.

Go to the Broward Supervisor of Elections website for a list of locations (browardvotes.gov). As we all know, vote-by-mail ballots can be dropped off at various collection boxes. So if the Supreme Court again allows this wannabe despot to whittle away our democracy, this is a way to let this regime know where he can shove his executive order.

Don’t miss the boat, Democrats

During the 2022 midterm election, the erosion of democratic norms stood as a top-tier concern for a vast majority of Democrats, but the party went full throttle on the issue of reproductive freedom after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

Subordinating the deterioration of democracy to the social outrage of abortion rights proved costly in 2022. And by shifting their focus, Democrats missed a historic opportunity to send a message that a foundational threat to the constitutional framework will not be tolerated, allowing Republicans to regain control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

With the 2026 midterms approaching, Democrats appear to have made affordability their signature campaign issue.

This strategy mirrors the exact approach that previously marginalized their power, inadvertently creating an opening for Republicans to subvert democratic institutions. Voter suppression, with Donald Trump leading the charge, is a prime example, and may be the leverage that Trump needs to advance his designs on absolute power.

Communism is merciless

The letter to the editor about “the crisis in Cuba” was priceless from Rick Garr (The crisis in Cuba deepens. Do we care? Letters, Aug. 26).

The Cuban people have been subjugated for more than 60 years by a merciless Communist dictatorship, yet it is somehow all the fault of Donald Trump and Marco Rubio.

Is Mr. Garr pitching a skit for SNL? Greenlight that baby. It’s hilarious.

Apparently Cuban communism isn’t working, and why? Because the whole world trades with and travels to Cuba but the U.S. does not? Are U.S. goods and money allowed to pass through to the huddled masses while literally everything else is confiscated and controlled by the government? That’s an unusual distinction.

The best part is the implication that “real” communism only works if subsidized and supported by outside capitalist forces. I remind Mr. Garr that the Cuban people have the government they want and have for over 60 years. For all you starry-eyed, emotional people voting for socialists and commies here in America, please note: “The warmth of collectivism” is only about 90 miles away. So go for it.
