Good evening, Mayor and Council Members.
I’m here tonight to speak in favor of the development at 303 Galen Drive.
I’ve lived in the Sunrise and Galen area for many years and I care deeply about what happens in this part of our Village, and about the future of Key Biscayne as a whole.
I understand why change can be difficult here. Key Biscayne is special. We all have memories of what this island was 10, 20 or 30 years ago and naturally we want to protect the things that made us fall in love with it.
That nostalgia is human. We tend to remember the past as better, simpler, and more familiar.
Preserving the character of Key Biscayne cannot mean preventing Key Biscayne from evolving.
Many of the buildings in the Sunrise and Galen area are now decades old. They belong to another era of construction, design and planning. At some point, responsible redevelopment is not a threat to our community. It is an investment in our community.
The property at 303 Galen Drive represents an opportunity to improve this area, modernize our housing stock, enhance the streetscape and demonstrate that Key Biscayne can move forward while still protecting the character that makes this Village unique.
Sometimes I feel that, as a Village, we spend so much energy trying to safeguard the past that we make it unnecessarily difficult to build the future.
I understand the instinct. We may all remember when going to Blockbuster on a Friday night was great. The world changed, and today we have Netflix. That doesn’t mean the memories were bad. It simply means that communities, technology and the way we live evolve.
Key Biscayne has to evolve too.
Our responsibility should not be to stop change. It should be to make sure change is thoughtful, responsible and beneficial to the community.
I believe 303 Galen is an opportunity for this Council to demonstrate that we can respect our past without being trapped by it.
We can preserve what makes Key Biscayne special while allowing our Village to enter its next chapter.
I encourage you to look at this project not simply as another development proposal, but as an opportunity for improvement, modernization and responsible evolution of our island.
