TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Friday night lights are back in Tallahassee, and Leon County Schools is rolling out new security measures as the Florida high school football season reaches Week 3.
The district has made adjustments aimed at keeping games “safe, orderly, and secure,” including what officials described as a tighter perimeter, added security staff, metal detectors and more officers at stadiums.
At Lincoln High School’s Week 3 matchup against Trinity Christian at Gene Cox Stadium, Lincoln varsity football coach Matthew Jackson said the priority is making sure fans can come and go safely.
“That’s goal number one to make sure people get in and out safely,” Jackson said.
Leon County Schools Safe School Officer Altramese Williams said the district is using new screening technology.
“So we got the ronin system in where we screen for all types of weapons, anything like that. We also have wands out here and everything as well,” Williams said.
Leon County Schools spokesperson Chris Petley said the district has updated procedures and added resources to improve safety at games.
“Keeping our student-athletes, staff and fans safe is always our top priority. We’ve added new technology, brought on more security staff and updated our safety procedures so everyone can enjoy all of the exciting Friday night action in a safe, welcoming environment,” Petley said.
Jackson said Lincoln has not had issues during his time with the program and credited stadium staff and law enforcement for their work.
“Fortunatly since I have been at Lincoln we have had no issues. Mr. Terry who is the grounds Guy here and the Sherrif’s department does a great job,” Jackson said.
Leon County Schools also reminded fans that it has a clear bag policy on game day. The district said anyone bringing a gun into a high school football game will face charges.
