(Fort Lauderdale, FL) – The city of Fort Lauderdale is cracking down on its 1500 registered vacation rental properties.
A proposed amendment to the Vacation Rental Ordinance comes as many residents complain about noise, parking and safety issues like a fire hazard or an unsecured pool.
The ordinance amendment also stiffens penalties for owners who anyone operating a vacation rental on an expired certificate will receive a $1,000-per-day fine.
Airbnb listings are subject to the same Vacation Rental certification. A final reading and vote on the change is expected after today’s discussion.
Some of the other changes include:
Owners can’t get new or renewed certificates if there are unpaid fines, liens or penalties.
Property owners must allow inspections for safety-related complaints.
Violations will reset after 12 consecutive months with no violations.
Operators can’t evade violations or suspensions by transferring a property to an entity they control.
The ordinance amendment passed the first reading and is scheduled to be voted on pending Friday’s Vacation Rental Stakeholder Meeting.
