MARTIN COUNTY — Shade is a precious commodity these days and the people at Community Greening get that.
The nonprofit is giving away free native shade trees at Halpatiokee Park in Stuart, starting at 10 a.m. on Sept. 12.
Species options will include Florida thatch palms, hackberry, red maple, and strangler fig trees.
All trees come in 3-gallon containers and include species information and proper planting guides.
The first-come, first-served giveaway starts at 10 a.m. and will continue until inventory runs out. There are no residency restrictions, but each household will be limited to one tree.
Community Greening is a nonprofit on a mission to improve our environment by increasing South Florida’s urban tree canopy.
Halpatioke Park is located at 8303 SW Lost River Road, Stuart.
