ORLANDO, Fla — Millions of drivers are expected to take Labor Day weekend trips despite gas prices that are nearly $1 higher than they were a year ago, according to AAA.

Florida’s average gas price was $3.92 per gallon as of Saturday, compared with $3.13 during last year’s Labor Day weekend. Nationally, gas prices have surpassed $4 per gallon, according to AAA. Drivers are urged to plan ahead for higher fuel costs and heavy traffic.

Marvel Sawyer is traveling from West Palm Beach to Atlanta for a family reunion.

“We do it every year, but it’s more like a city, a clan,” Sawyer said. “Originally, I’m from West Africa. So when we come together, it’s all of us. It’s a village.”

Sawyer said gas prices are affecting how her family travels, and to save money, they are carpooling.

“So, a bunch of us from the same area are traveling together,” Sawyer said. “So, we save money by doing that. Gas is definitely high.”

AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said drivers will pay about $13 more for a full tank of gas compared with last Labor Day.

“There are a few different factors, but oil prices remain one of the biggest drivers in the movements that we see in gas prices,” Jenkins said. “Oil prices have been really influenced by the situation between the United States and Iran.”

Even with the higher costs, Jenkins said people who already planned Labor Day weekend getaways are generally still taking those trips. Orlando was listed as the second most popular domestic destination for Labor Day weekend travel.

Jenkins said, “Florida gas prices have hung around $3.90 per gallon during the past 45 days. So, not a lot of sticker shock heading into the weekend, which means that people who have planned a Labor Day weekend getaway are generally still taking that trip.”

He added, “Despite the higher costs, we don’t expect fuel prices to deter holiday travelers. I mean, gas prices are typically one factor that travelers consider when they’re planning a trip, but it’s not necessarily the deciding factor.”

AAA is also advising drivers to inspect their vehicles and tires before long trips and to plan for congestion. Last year during Labor Day weekend, AAA responded to 405,000 roadside assistance calls across the country because of various vehicle issues.

Airports are also expected to be busy. AAA reported airfare is up 2% compared with last year, with the average roundtrip ticket costing about $750.

In popular destinations such as Orlando, airfare is nearly 20% higher than last year.
