Suspect dead after officer-involved shooting on Katherine St., Fort Myers Police say

Layza Pinero RestoFORT MYERS, Fla. —

A suspect is dead after an officer-involved shooting on Katherine Street on Saturday, according to the Fort Myers Police Department.

FMPD says that at around 5:48 a.m., officers received a call for service in the 2300 block of Katherine Street. The call led to an officer-involved shooting.

The suspect was transported to a hospital, where they later died.

Caution tape surrounded several homes in the area for hours as investigators worked to piece together what led to the incident.

Sarah Vansant, a Fort Myers resident, shared her reaction to the heavy police presence.

“I’m actually shocked. And this is a quiet neighborhood,” Vansant said.

She added, “So I come out and I see all this. It’s just not something that happens in this neighborhood right here. It just isn’t. So I’m sure all the neighbors are wondering what happened. And everybody [is] normally quiet.”

Vansant also reflected on the neighborhood’s past reputation.

“I mean, normally, like back in the day, there should be a drug area, known drug area. So people would probably think it had something to do with that. But it’s, I don’t, it’s real quiet here. I don’t know. I’m just shocked. It’s not something you see on a daily basis,” she said.

FMPD says that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, and that the officer has been placed on administrative leave per department policy.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
