New program lets gardeners take, share and grow seeds for a greener community

PORT ST. LUCIE — The UF/IFAS Extension Office, The Urban Horticulture Program, the St. Lucie County Master Gardener Volunteers and the St. Lucie County Library System is launching a seed library kickoff at the Morningside Branch Library, 2410 SE Morningside Blvd., on Saturday, Sept. 19 from 10 to 11 a.m.
The seed library is a collaborative effort between the UF/IFAS St. Lucie County Extension Office and our St. Lucie County libraries to encourage gardening, promote plant diversity and connect our community with the joy of growing plants.
Through this initiative, community members can share, save, and exchange seeds while learning more about Florida-Friendly Landscaping™, sustainable gardening practices and plants that thrive in our local environment. The Seed Library will start at the Morningside Branch Library with plans to expand the program to all St. Lucie County libraries in the future.
How does the seed library work?
Take seeds
Browse the available seeds and take what you need for your home garden. Select seeds that are appropriate for your growing space and gardening goals.
Share seeds
Have extra seeds from your garden? You are welcome to donate them to the seed library.
Please provide seeds in a labeled envelope or container with: Plant name | Variety (if known) | Date collected or packaged | Any helpful growing information
Grow and share
Plant your seeds, enjoy your garden and consider saving seeds from successful plants to share with others.
Before sharing seeds
Before bringing seeds to the seed library, please check the UF/IFAS Assessment of Non-Native Plants in Florida’s Natural Areas to make sure the plant is not considered invasive or a potential threat to Florida’s ecosystems.
