Celtics star Jaylen Brown hit a 17-foot jumpshot to put Boston ahead by 1 point, 96-95, against the Magic halfway through the fourth quarter of Friday’s NBA Cup game at Kia Center.
Orlando had a decision to make.
Would Jamahl Mosley‘s squad allow the Celtics to steal one on the road or would it tighten up on both ends of the floor to capture a much-needed home victory?
Orlando opted for the latter when it outscored Boston 28-14 over the course of the final 5:45 to win 123-110 behind a team-high 27 points from forward Franz Wagner.
“It’s a really important win,” he said in the locker room after the 13-point win. “A really good game for us. I liked our energy all 48 [minutes], even when they went on runs. That’s how it’s got to be consistently.”
Wagner was one of seven Magic scorers to finish in double figures when the team recorded 28 assists (improving to 3-0 in those assist instances).
“That’s what coach wants,” Paolo Banchero said. “Everybody touching it, everybody getting to be aggressive out there on the floor.”
Perhaps the most significant aspect of Friday’s game for Orlando was the fact that the team responded each time Boston went on a run, something that didn’t happen often during the team’s three road losses last week.
The Celtics opened the second quarter on an 14-5 run before the Magic punched back with 8 unanswered points. Later, Boston came out of the half on an 11-2 run to tie the game at 62, but Orlando was able to hold onto a 4-point lead entering the fourth quarter.
“We just stuck with it throughout the game, withstood the runs they made,” Banchero said.
Added Wagner: “It’s our mentality. When a game is tied or close, it’s about making plays, and I feel like we did that. I thought we had a good desire and good urgency to just try and make the right play every time.”
One of those plays that worked well was early in the game when Banchero set a quick screen for Wagner at the top of the key. Wagner tossed the ball to Banchero, who drew a double team near the free-throw line. Banchero then swung the ball out to the left wing for a wide-open 3-pointer, one of two he hit last night.
Bane totaled 22 points, six rebounds, seven assists, one steal and two blocks in 36 minutes. Bane and Banchero both had a team-high plus-minus rating of plus-25 in their time on the court.
“Our chemistry is getting better,” Banchero said about playing with Bane. “Whenever we’re in actions together, good things happen. So, just trying to see if we can do that more and more.”
Wagner said the Magic want Bane to be aggressive when searching for the right shots.
“Not saying he wasn’t aggressive [before] but I think we’ve got to do a better job as a unit to find him and feature him as much as we can in situations that fit his game,” Wagner said. “I thought we did that [Friday] a little bit better.”
The Magic (4-5) host the Celtics again on Sunday. Even though they’re not the exact same squad that eliminated Orlando from the first round of the playoffs last season (especially without Jayson Tatum), Boston (4-6) won’t go down without a fight.
Beyond Tatum (right Achilles repair) and Orlando’s Moe Wagner (left knee injury recovery), neither team had any new injuries to report for Sunday’s contest.
“Coming into the next game, they might try something different, but you’ve just got to be ready for whatever they may throw at us,” Banchero said. “At the end of the day, you’ve just got to come out, execute and get another win.”
Ultimately, however, Orlando’s success Sunday will be more about the Magic themselves than Boston. On Friday, the Magic made a season-high 17 3-pointers when they shot 47.2% from distance, their best mark yet this year.
After facing the Celtics again, the Magic host Portland on Monday.
“Just focus again on us,” Wagner said. “Especially the way we started, [we have to] just continue to get better and keep working on our habits.”
