Time is running out for aspiring artists hoping to launch their careers through one of the nation’s most respected festival mentorship programs. The Coconut Grove Arts Festival (CGAF) is accepting applications for its acclaimed 2027 Emerging Artists Program through Sept. 11 — and organizers are urging interested artists not to wait.
The intensive two-year program is designed to prepare aspiring artists for successful careers on the national art festival circuit, combining professional education, hands-on experience, and one-on-one mentoring to help transform talented creatives into accomplished exhibiting artists.
“One of the greatest responsibilities we have as an arts organization is to ensure there is a vibrant next generation of artists ready to carry this tradition forward,” said Pamela Mayer, chairwoman of the Coconut Grove Arts Festival. “The Emerging Artists Program is about far more than preparing participants for one festival. It’s about investing in artists, building careers, and strengthening the future of outdoor art festivals across the country. Every accomplished festival artist started somewhere, and we’re proud to help provide that first step.”
With the Sept. 11 deadline fast approaching, now entering another year of growth, the Emerging Artists Program has evolved into one of the Festival’s signature educational initiatives. During the first year, participants attend complimentary workshops covering portfolio development, booth presentation, pricing strategies, financial planning, and the business side of exhibiting. They also serve as interns during the Coconut Grove Arts Festival, working alongside nationally recognized artists and gaining firsthand experience in every aspect of operating a successful festival business.
For Stephen Anglim, a graduate of the program who has since established himself as a professional fine artist, the experience proved transformational.
“Learning directly from established artists and then having the opportunity to exhibit my own work the following year gave me both the knowledge and confidence to grow my business,” Anglim said. “The generosity of the artists who shared their time, advice, and experience made a lasting impact on me.”
During the second year, participants graduate into the Festival’s dedicated Emerging Artists section, where they exhibit and sell their work while continuing to receive individualized mentoring and application guidance.
“The festival experience is unlike anything taught in a traditional classroom,” said Camille Marchese, executive director of the Coconut Grove Arts Festival. “Artists learn everything from presenting their work professionally and connecting with collectors to managing finances, transporting artwork, and building a sustainable business. Our goal is to give emerging artists both the creative confidence and entrepreneurial skills they need to succeed.”
Since its redesign, the program has become a model for nurturing independent artists while helping sustain the broader outdoor arts community. The Festival views the initiative not simply as an investment in Coconut Grove, but as an investment in the future of fine art festivals nationwide. As Marchese often notes, successful festivals depend on a continuous pipeline of talented new artists entering the profession.
Looking back on his own experience, Anglim says the lessons continue to shape his career today. “Looking back, the program was a true turning point in my career, and I’ll always be thankful to everyone at CGAF for creating such a meaningful opportunity for emerging artists,” he said.
Applicants must act before the Sept. 11 deadline. Eligibility requirements include being at least 18 years old, never having exhibited in a major juried art festival, and either residing in Miami-Dade County or being willing to travel to Miami and provide their own housing during the Festival. College enrollment is not required, making the program accessible to artists from a wide range of educational and professional backgrounds.

The Emerging Artists Program perfectly reflects that commitment.”
