An incident involving the shooting of a dog on Sept. 6 in Indian River Estates was under investigation, according to St. Lucie County sheriff’s officials.
Preliminary information showed a woman arrived home in the 5900 block of Palm Drive and pulled into her driveway when two dogs approached her vehicle and prevented her from exiting safely, according to sheriff’s officials. She contacted her husband for help.
The husband came outside and saw the dogs before he returned inside the residence to get a handgun, according to officials. When he came back outside, one of the dogs charged toward him in an aggressive manner.

As the dog approached and before he was bitten, the man fired his handgun, hitting one of the dogs, according to officials. Both dogs fled to a nearby home on Myrtle Drive, where they lived.
Detectives were reviewing surveillance footage, performing interviews with other witnesses and gathering more information as of 6 p.m., and the investigation remained ongoing.
The owner took the injured dog to an emergency animal hospital for treatment, according to officials, but the dog’s condition wasn’t immediately available.
