According to a preliminary investigation, the woman pulled into her driveway, and two dogs approached her vehicle and prevented her from safely getting out of her vehicle.

She contacted her husband for assistance.

He said he came outside and observed the dogs before returning inside the residence to retrieve a handgun. When he came back outside, one dog charged toward him in an aggressive manner, the sheriff’s office said.

As the dog approached and before he was bitten, the man fired his handgun, striking one of the dogs.

After the shooting, both dogs fled to a nearby residence on Myrtle Drive, where they reside.

The owner transported the injured dog to an emergency animal hospital for treatment. The dog’s condition is not currently available.

“At this time, the investigation remains active, and no further conclusions will be drawn until all available evidence has been reviewed,” the sheriff’s office said. “The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to conducting a thorough and objective investigation and will provide additional verified information when appropriate.”
