Florida’s death row executions are up to 32 in last two years
Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty held a vigil for the execution of Harold Jean Lucas. Lucas has been on death row for 50 years due to the state making continuous errors. While the rate of executions grows in Florida, citizens are continously joining movements against the policy.
Lakeland considers tightening water restrictions amid drought
The Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD), moved to a phase 3 water drought in early April, but these water restrictions have yet to be enforced through penalties and fines. Commisioners have expressed concerns about enforcing citations and fines without properly notifying residents.
Real estate agents put $10 million into campaign supporting Amendment 3
The proposed amendment to Florida’s constitution would drastically cut property taxes and force a reduction in government services. It would wipe out over $12 billion a year in revenue for municipalities. Experts expect that the tax cut would drive up home prices, which could benefit realtors.
Labor Day celebrated at Tampa picnic
Labor Day brought union members, families, and political candidates together at a Tampa picnic organized by the West Central Florida Labor Council. Daniela Simic, a longtime educator running for the Hillsborough County School Board in District 2, spoke about teacher pay and the importance of unions.
Eskamani has called on the Florida Athletic Commission to revoke the license of promoter, Duel Arena, following a controversial kickboxing event. Videos appear to show one competitor with Nazi tattoos giving a Nazi salute to a crowd and the crowd returning the Nazi salute, and hanging an oversized Nazi flag.
