MIAMI, Fla. (CBS12) — The four bodies belonging to a Florida family who went missing near the Bahamas were found on Tuesday, authorities confirmed to CBS Miami.

CBS Miami reported the plane took off on Monday from Great Harbour Cay in the Bahamas at about 10:12 a.m. and was headed to Miami Executive Airport in Miami-Dade County. In a statement, the family said the plane’s last known contact was at 11:04 a.m. when the plane was about 13 miles west of Andros Island.

The U.S. Coast Guard said on X that the plane went down about 15 miles off Andros Island and that it is assisting the Royal Bahamas Defence Force in the search for the aircraft and the family.

The bodies were found on Tuesday by the Royal Bahamas Defense Force.

Those on board were pilot Mario Lamar, 80; Lili Lamar, 79; and two of their grandchildren, Sofia Sosa, 28, and Christian Sosa, 22.

CBS Miami reported the family was returning home from Miami after a trip for Labor Day weekend. Silva Larrieu, Mario and Lili’s niece, told CBS Miami that Sofi Sosa had texted her parents in a family chat that they were leaving and a flight plan that showed the time the plane was expected to land.

The family contacted authorities after seeing messages were not being delivered, CBS Miami reports. Mario Lamar has over 40 years of flying experience, kept the plane in pristine condition and was very cautious, Larrieu said.

Bahamas police identified the aircraft as a five-seat Piper PA-34 with tail number N212ML.
