TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The first week of September is recognized as Drowsy Driving Prevention Week in honor of RonShay Dugans, an 8-year-old girl who was killed by a drowsy driver in Tallahassee in 2008.
On Sept. 5, 2008, a truck crashed into the back of a bus carrying children to the Tallahassee Boys and Girls Club. Dugans was killed in the crash at the intersection of Capital Circle and Orange Avenue.
“As a family, we made a decision that RonShay’s death would not be in vain,” said RonShay’s father, Ron Dugans. “We will continue to turn this tragedy into triumph.”
Dugans said the family keeps RonShay’s memory alive each year by spreading awareness about the dangers of drowsy driving and working to prevent other families from experiencing the pain of losing a loved one.
A marker now stands at the intersection in her honor. More than a decade after her death, her family said the emotions surrounding the crash are still raw.
“Even being at this spot, it’s very difficult for us,” said Dugans’ aunt, Josie West. “We have family members that do not drive past here.”
West added that RonShay was always smiling, loved to dance and brought joy to those around her. She would have been 26 years old this year.
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reminds drivers to get enough sleep before driving and take a break every 100 miles or every two hours on long trips.
Officials also warn that turning up the radio or rolling down the windows are not effective ways to stay alert.
