The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office on Monday confirmed a man shot one of two dogs acting aggressively and attacking family members in the Indian River Estates subdivision.
After the incident Sunday in the 5900 block of Palm Drive, detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division reviewed available surveillance footage and conducted interviews.

“Investigators confirmed that two dogs were behaving aggressively and attempting to attack family members,” the agency posted on Facebook.
The man’s wife pulled into her driveway, and two dogs approached her vehicle and prevented her from safely getting out of her vehicle.
She contacted her husband for assistance.
He said he came outside and observed the dogs before returning inside the residence to retrieve a handgun. When he came back outside, one dog charged toward him in an aggressive manner, the sheriff’s office said.
As the dog approached and before he was bitten, the man fired his handgun, striking one of the dogs.
After the shooting, both dogs fled to a nearby residence on Myrtle Drive, where they reside.
The owner took the injured dog to an emergency animal hospital for treatment, and the dog needed surgery.
“At this time, the status of the dog is unknown,” the agency said.
A request was submitted to Animal Control for follow-up investigation.
