TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Tallahassee City Commission approved a contract for new city manager Karen Jumonville on Wednesday.
The approval comes after more than an hour of intense discussion.
About a dozen public speakers and Commissioners Jack Porter and Jeremy Matlow came out strongly against this contract.
The biggest sticking point was that Jumonville’s contract requires a 4-1 supermajority vote to fire her. The current city manager contract only requires a 3-2 simple majority.
Mayor John Dailey said he added the supermajority vote to the contract because he beleives it depoliticizes the position. He pointed out that the city’s inspector general requires a supermajority to be fired, as well as the Leon County administrator.
But Porter rejects that idea.
“The city manager is not designed to be independent, the inspector general is. The city manager, the role is administrative. It is to serve at the pleasure of the city commission who the voters of Tallahassee elect,” Porter said.
She made a substitute motion to change Jumonville’s contract back to a simple majority, but it failed 3-1, prompting several people in the crowd to boo.
The contract was approved by that same 3-2 margin.
Jumonville, who currently serves as Tallahassee’s Deputy City Manager, will start in her new role on October 1. It is a five year contract.
