Orlando couple married in hospital after groom hurt in crash on way to wedding, attorneys say
ORLANDO, Fla. —
An Orlando couple was married in a hospital on Saturday after the groom was injured in a head-on crash while on his way to the wedding venue, according to the couple’s attorneys.
In addition to a significant laceration to the knee, both of Kapri DeRamus’ arms were broken in the crash, as well as his jaw and a rib, the Osborne, Francis & Pettis Law Firm said in a news release. He was released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon, the release states.
The crash occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 5 when a vehicle crossed the lane on East Altamonte Drive and struck the car that DeRamus was taking to a venue in Altamonte Springs, the law firm said.
According to the Altamonte Springs Police Department, the crash — at Hermits Trail and State Road 436 (East Altamonte Drive) — sent a total of two adults and a juvenile to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

“His bride-to-be got a call just an hour before the wedding ceremony that her future husband was in an accident and was being transported to the hospital. She and her family who were gathered for the wedding immediately drove to ORMC where Mr. DeRamus was being treated,” the release states. “But instead of postponing their nuptials, after Mr. DeRamus was stabilized, the couple opted to gather their friends later that evening while he was still in a hospital bed at ORMC to tie the knot.”
DeRamus’ grandfather officiated the service, according to the law firm.
“(DeRamus) was hospitalized with serious injuries so rather than saying ‘I do’ at the events center they selected in Altamonte Springs, the bride, Tyasia Thomas, and groom instead said their vows in a multipurpose room at ORMC later that evening,” the release states.
An online fundraiser has since been started to help the couple get through medical expenses and loss of income.
The couple plans to hold a news conference with their attorneys at 11 a.m. Thursday.
