JACKSONVILLE, Onslow County — The City of Jacksonville’s Patriot Day Observance will include a tribute to Navy SEAL Christopher Campbell, according to the Frogman 3D Bowhunters Challenge and 5K Trail Run Facebook page.
The ceremony begins at 8:15 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at the 9/11 Memorial Beam in Lejeune Memorial Gardens. It is open to the public.
This year marks 25 years since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The annual observance honors people killed in the attacks and those lost in the subsequent War on Terror.
According to Frogman, Campbell died on Aug. 6, 2011, when the CH-47 Chinook helicopter known as Extortion 17 was shot down during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. He was one of 31 Americans killed.
The Frogman Bowhunters Challenge and 5K Trail Run was founded by the Campbell family to honor Campbell’s memory and his final wish to support combat-wounded veterans.
The City of Jacksonville says this year’s ceremony will feature honor guard members from the Jacksonville Police and Fire Departments, representatives from Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, and performances by the 2nd Marine Division Band, Jacksonville High School Cardinal Chamber Strings and Dixon High School chorus.
The ceremony will be recorded and available later on G10TV, the city’s Facebook page and the Cablecast app. City of Jacksonville event details
