TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Theatre Tallahassee opens its production of “Come From Away” Thursday, in the spirit of the unprecedented hosts of 38 planes on 9/11.
According to Theatre Tallahassee’s website, “Come From Away” is a musical based on the true story of the people of Gander, Newfoundland, as they find themselves hosting 38 planes full of thousands of passengers from around the globe who were diverted to their airstrip on Sept. 11.
Originally written by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, “Come From Away” shows how the people of Gander gave the stranded travelers a neighborhood welcome with music and an open bar.

Extending the musical’s neighborly spirit, Theatre Tallahassee is partnering with Refuge House for this production. The organization provides support and services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Jessy Reaves, Theatre Tallahassee’s director for “Come From Away,” said she hopes audiences are inspired to help others after watching the performance.
“The importance of kindness,” Reaves said. “It’s one of the things like when we were looking to cast the show, you’re looking for talent, of course, but you’re also looking for kind people who are going to be there to help support each other, especially in a show like this.”
Theatre Tallahassee is encouraging audiences to donate to Refuge House in the form of direct donations, gift cards or purchases from the organization’s Amazon wish list.
This production runs from Sept. 10-27, and tickets are available for purchase online.
