Step back in time with a unique musical and film perspective inside the lives of the infamous rock ‘n’ roll duo Don and Phil Everly in Florida Repertory Theatre’s production of “Forever Everly: The Everly Brothers Rockumentary”. Defining the sound of a generation, this brotherly duo known for their hallmark harmonies, the production features the known hits, those hits influenced by these two artists, while delving into the brothers’ lives through iconic film footage, storytelling and live music.
“Honoring the real, unvarnished history of Don and Phil Everly, “Forever Everly” allows the audiences to understand the emotional weight, the triumphs and the fractures behind the music, making the live performances of songs like ‘Bye Bye Love’ cut much deeper,” Greg Longenhagen, producing artistic director of Florida Repertory Theatre, said. “Audiences will be treated to the Everly brothers’ greatest hits, including ‘Wake up Little Suzy’, ‘Cathy’s Clown’, ‘Let It Be Me’, ‘All I Have to Do Is Dream,’ and many more.”

‘Forever Everly’ launches Florida Repertory Theatre’s 29th season on Sept. 15 with a burst of infectious energy, pulling patrons out of their summer entertainment lull and setting a vibrant, innovative tone for the entire year, Longenhagen believes.
“Opening a season requires a high-energy production that sparks joy and immediate conversation,” Longenhagen reflects. “We were instantly captivated by the sheer brilliance of the Everly Brothers’ vocal arrangements and the distinct way this show honors them. We’ve been looking for an Everly Brothers show for several years and we found the one that will knock the socks of Southwest Florida audiences.”
Finding a production that replicates the Everly Brothers’ tight, iconic two-part close harmonies is rare, according to Longenhagen.
“While nostalgia is a powerful magnet, ‘Forever Everly’ is unique because it isn’t passive,” he continued. “It belongs in Florida Rep’s 29th season because our audiences demand high-caliber musicality and storytelling. This script seamlessly marries elite live instrumentation with a deeply moving narrative about brotherhood and fame.”
The show is truly an experience blending film and live music, taking audiences into the lives, struggles and high moments of Don and Phil Everly, one of the country’s most influential musical duos.
More than a tribute show
Both Gallardo and Mancuso created ‘Forever Everly’ in 2022, but have been working together for over a decade, which was helpful when recreating the brothers’ sound for the show.
“Jared and I have been fortunate to have worked with each other for over 10 years now. We know each other’s idiosyncrasies; we’re like brothers,” Gallardo believes. “We’ve honed our voices to create the iconic Everly sound and are excited to share it with you.”
Gallardo reflects on how this style of show – a rockumentary – adds something unexpected and fresh to classic tunes.

“I think adding in the documentary element really brings our show to a new level. I also think this show is special because we not only highlight the best of the Everly Brothers, but we also reveal a lot of the strong musical influence they had over other artists. You may be surprised to see the superstars they inspired,” he believes.
When rehearsing for this show, since it combines a documentary style genre with live music, Gallardo explains there were nuances in preparation as it’s more than a tribute band performance.
“It was a little different pausing for documentary breaks, but when the documentary aspect is combined with our live performance, it creates something special,” he explained. “A live story book, if you will.”
Having the documentary as part of the production changes a lot for the creators of the show, who are also performing the songs in their audience interaction.
“With our other shows, there’s a lot of interacting with the audience throughout the show. Lots of ‘are you having a good time’ and jokes and bits. But with this, the documentary (narrated by Allison Kelly) does almost all of the speaking for us,” Mancuso described. “When we first created it, we worried that there would be a disconnect between us and the audience, but it didn’t. The documentary really pulls people into the story of the brothers, giving context for everything, and then we pick up from there and perform the songs live.”
The two things combined really allow the audience to get lost in it in a way Mancuso says he hasn’t with other tributes. “We also get asked how we created the show a lot, and I think that interest in the craft of it all is something that stands out to people,” he adds.
Gallardo continues that he is honored to perform these songs. “It’s always fun seeing the reaction in the audience when we play the hits, but there a few deep cuts that really leave the room quiet in wonder. ‘Silver-haired Daddy’ is an especially touching song,” Gallardo added.
“I personally enjoy performing ‘Cathy’s Clown’. The song itself is just so iconic, the harmonies are fun, but then we bring in a fun element at that point in the show that really wows the audience,” Mancuso said.
Behind the harmonies, a story of brotherhood
The rockumentary not only celebrates the Everly hits, but the production also dives into the relationships of the brothers and musical partners.
“I think that first and foremost, Don and Phil were brothers. They grew up (beside each other) and learned to work as a unit before being given the opportunity to explore solo careers,” Gallardo reflects. “They were better together. The fact that they were able to stay relevant through years of change, distraction and musical politics gives us extra passion and respect for the brothers.”
Don and Phil being brothers adds an extra layer of pressure to make it work because family was on the line, Mancuso believes.

“As folks will see in the show, they certainly did have a complicated relationship. In that era, the dawn of all of this kind of music, we saw a lot of those artists struggle with substance abuse, personal dramas, and exploitative practices from a music business that was also figuring out how this uncharted territory of popular music was impacting the world as new artists like Buddy Holly, Paul Anka, Elvis, Ritchie Valens, The Beatles, The Kinks, Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry, The Beach Boys, all of that were flooding the airwaves,” he described. “Any other band could just have one member turn to the other and say, ‘I quit.’”
Neither musician portrays a specific brother as a distinct role, but Gallardo provides insight into the brothers.
“While we aren’t dedicated to a specific role in the show, I find that I take nuances from Phil,” Gallardo believes. “I came to find that Phil can be a little more playful, while Don is a serious bird.”
Avoiding imitation was important to Mancuso. “We aren’t specifically tributing either brother. When it comes to creating different tribute-style shows, we like to steer clear of imitation. We’ll look the part with costumes, hair styles, instruments, etc., but we tend to think that nobody can really beat the originals,” he continued. “So, we try to create a salute to these greats.”
Throughout this show, the two trade off taking on something Don or Phil sang lead on as Mancuso explains is for the simple reason that one of two said, “Hey, can I sing that part?”
“It’s nice having a working relationship with your best friend where we can just easily trade ideas, step up for each other, and work together to deliver what’s best for the show,” he adds.
A legacy that still resonates
While audiences might be familiar with the classic songs, Gallardo provides insight into what he believes audiences will take away after seeing the show.

“I think seeing the arc of the Everly Brothers’ professional career will be something audiences will be surprised by,” he continued. “The brothers faced real turmoil advancing their musical careers, and we provide some enlightening details in the show.”
Mancuso adds that “We’ve had mega-fans of the Everly Brothers come up to us and say, ‘I didn’t know that about them.’ I think that’s a really cool thing. We did our research when we put this show together, and we could fit in more info in 90 minutes. So, it’s really rewarding when there are people who come up and tell us how they learned something new.”
The biggest “whoa” moment Mancuso says they aim for in all of their shows is the deep understanding of what it means to have something be timeless.
“These songs still hold up today, they’re catchy, they’re about things we still experience today, and they’re so smartly arranged,” he adds. “It’s truly a joy to see young people, or even adults, who don’t know this music coming in, and leaving as new fans of the Everly Brothers. Plus, the documentary component of the show really adds a layer of humanizing them, so you can understand the full cultural impact of the songs.”
The Everly Brothers’ music spans multiple generations. “Patrons who grew up with the Everly’s will feel the thrill of nostalgia, transported back to hearing these classics on the radio,” Longenhagen said. “Concurrently, younger audiences and contemporary music fans will find immense joy in uncovering the origins of the harmony styles utilized by their own favorite modern artists. It is a spectacular bridge between generations.”
Audiences cannot fully appreciate the Everly Brothers without recognizing that they created the blueprint for modern pop and rock harmonies, Longenhagen believes.

“By incorporating tracks from The Beatles, The Beach Boys and Simon and Garfunkel, the show illustrates a beautiful musical lineage. The Everly sound didn’t stay in the 1950s and 60s—it shaped the soundtrack of the entire world and the music we listen to today,” he continued. “Audiences will walk away realizing that these timeless tracks weren’t just catchy radio hits; rather, they were hard-won milestones of a revolutionary musical partnership. The Everly’s had 35 billboard charting hits. More than any other duo in American Musical history.”
“Forever Everly” is being performed in the intimate setting of Florida Repertory Theatre – the ArtStage Studio, which places every single seat just steps away from the action.
