TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Tallahassee Fire Department gathered at Station 1 downtown on Friday for a moving tribute to mark Sept. 11.
A solemn ceremony was followed by a memorial walk to the state capitol and back.
Tallahassee Police, Leon County deputies and paramedics, city leaders and others joined the firefighters to walk exactly 1.1 miles, symbolically honoring the 110 floors of the World Trade Center towers.
Some firefighters even walked the route in their full, heavy bunker gear to simulate the physical burden carried by the firefighters who rushed into the Twin Towers.

A storm opened up overhead as the walk began, but that didn’t stop anyone from completing the walk.
“You’re walking in the rain, and you think, ‘I don’t want to be walking in this,’ then you think about what they went through 25 years ago, and there’s no way you can just dishonor them by not finishing this walk,” said Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell. “It’s just a very small price to pay to honor the men and women who lost their lives 25 years ago.”
