On a serious note, I know there is a collection of people out there who are just waiting for the moment to say “same ol’ Jags.” If you aren’t that person, you know at least one person like that. Everyone needs to find that person and tell them to look in the mirror and let it go.
This team is taking that next step. Good teams win hard games. Great teams win easy games. This was supposed to be an easy W, and the Jaguars went out there and made it look just like what it was supposed to be. Easy.
Twenty-four-point wins are hard to get in the NFL. Even harder to get in Week 1. Openers tend to be sloppy. I mean, look around the league. With the way the preseason and stuff have gone, teams are slow out of the gate. But that wasn’t the case for the Jaguars; they put 34 points on the board, and let’s be serious, they could have put 50 on the board had they wanted to.
Trevor Lawrence was on one — four touchdowns to four different receivers. But even with Lawrence out there spreading the ball around like prime Chris Paul, it’s pretty clear that Parker Washington is his favorite target. The Jags offense runs through No. 11; there are no questions about that. Washington led the team in yards and targets. He is WR1. There was a lot of talk this week about the contract negotiations between Washington and the Jags … Look, I get it. Receiver contracts are expensive, but he is worth it. Pay the man. Just get the deal done.
While the offense will get the headlines, the defense was lights out. Keeping defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile in Jacksonville this offseason was a huge win. He was in his bag! The personnel groupings he put on the field confused the Browns offense all day. Josh Hines-Allen, Travon Walker, and Foye Oluokun all made plays. One guy that won’t get a ton of hype but is playing an important role is Jarrian Jones. He lined up all over the field for the defense. Jourdan Lewis said Jones is their “Charles Woodson.” I’d say that is a pretty good guy to compare to.
This is a perfect way to start the season with a dominant win, but next week is a much tougher game against Denver. But they went to Mile High last year and beat the Broncos by 14. So maybe in this case, they want to be the same old Jags and make history repeat itself.
