September is one of the most popular months for birthdays in the U.S., coinciding with Child Passenger Safety Month, which emphasizes the importance of car seat safety for parents.

For many parents, the first ride home from the hospital with their newborn is a cherished moment, and safety is a top priority when carrying such precious cargo, whether newborn or into their teenage years.

Lina Chico, the injury prevention coordinator at Orlando Health Children’s Arnold Palmer Hospital, shared insights on the significance of Child Passenger Safety Month.

Child passenger safety month serves as a reminder for parents to prioritize safety and make informed decisions about car seats to protect their children during every ride.

For new and expecting parents, Chico emphasized the importance of selecting the right car seat.

Parents and guardians should consider the car seat’s compatibility with their vehicle and whether it meets safety standards.

Chico also highlighted common mistakes parents make when installing or using car seats, including not securing the car seat tightly enough or not using the correct installation method for their vehicle.

When it comes to ensuring the harness is fitted correctly, Chico advised parents to check for snugness.

The harness should be snug enough that you cannot pinch any excess strap material at the child’s shoulders.

Parents often wonder when it’s time to move their child to a different type or size of car seat.

Chico explained that a sure sign that it’s time to transition is when the child exceeds the height or weight limits specified by the car seat manufacturer.
