Miami Autism Dad Victor Antunez interviews Abby Peskin, Ph.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist at University of Miami PCIT 305, about the shortcoming she kept seeing in therapy for young children: parents learn strategy after strategy in an office, then can’t use any of it in the moment their child needs them. PCIT, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, flips the model. Instead of a therapist treating the child directly, the parent delivers the intervention, coached live as they use the strategies with their own child. Abby lays out the 2 principles that guide the work: behavior is communication, and children want to do well when they can.
