A woman arrested last year for posing as a caregiver to steal from elderly victims in Broward County and who was wanted after authorities said she went right back to her theft scheme after her release from jail has been taken into custody, officials said.

Jamisha Shamari Sylvain, 27, was taken into custody Monday night after an hours-long standoff, Broward Sheriff’s Office officials said.

BSO’s Burglary Apprehension Team had been conducting surveillance on Sylvain before she entered an apartment in Deerfield Beach and refused to exit, officials said.

Deputies, SWAT officers and crisis negotiators responded and she was convinced to leave the apartment, authorities said.

Sylvain had been arrested in December 2025 on several charges, including fraud, exploitation of the elderly less than $20,000 and burglary of an unoccupied dwelling.

According to BSO, deputies had received a report that an elderly man was being exploited by a woman, and that she was posing as a caregiver at the B’nai B’rith apartments in Deerfield Beach.

Defectives said the elderly man let the woman into his apartment, and she took his credit card and withdrew money several times, which totaled $1,600.

As detectives continued to investigate, they learned that more incidents had happened in which Sylvain pretended to be a professional caregiver and would go to elderly victims’ apartments after they gave her permission.

In some instances, detectives said, Sylvain would tell her victims that she was assigned as a caregiver by their health insurance company.

Once she got inside the apartments, Sylvain would steal their debit cards and tell her victims that she needed their personal banking information, authorities said.

Sylvain was released from jail in May, and since then, detectives have identified at least two new cases involving a “similar ruse” as before, with Sylvain falsely identifying herself to gain the trust of elderly victims, BSO officials said.

In one instance, authorities said Sylvain found a victim at The Pointe at Deerfield Beach Senior Living, where she pretended to be a building manager then stole a debit card, credit cards and cash, authorities said.

Sylvain was booked into jail on Monday on charges including grand theft, burglary, organized fraud, and criminal use of personal identification information, records showed.

BSO officials said their investigation was ongoing.
