Overnight and midday construction will bring lane reductions, side-street closures and intersection upgrades to the North Beach corridor.
Heads up, North Beach drivers! If 71st Street is part of your commute, be sure to plan ahead for extra travel time. The Florida Department of Transportation has kicked off a $2.2 million roadway improvement project that impacts traffic from Bay Drive East all the way to S.R. A1A/Collins Avenue through early 2027.
How traffic will be impacted
As crews work on the road, here’s everything you need to know to avoid the worst of the gridlock:
Eastbound: One lane closed Sunday through Thursday (6 p.m. to 7 a.m.) and Friday through Saturday (7 p.m. to 8 a.m.). Two lanes close overnight Sunday through Thursday (11 p.m. to 7 a.m.) and Friday through Saturday (12 a.m. to 8 a.m.).
Westbound: One lane closed Sunday through Thursday (9:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.) and Friday through Saturday (10 p.m. to 8 a.m.).
Both directions: One lane closed weekdays and weekends from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Side streets: One lane on surrounding side streets closed daily between 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Why is work being done on 71st Street?
The project is focused on making the area safer for pedestrians and extending the life of the roadway. According to FDOT, crews are working on a full repaving and restriping of the road, as well as upgraded signals and crosswalks at all intersections between Bay Drive East and Harding Avenue, a new video detection system installation, pedestrian curb ramps and signals for ADA compliance.
