Repeated crashes along US-17 in Jacksonville prompt homeowners to protect their properties

  • September 17, 2026

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A stretch of U.S. 17 just south of the Edgewood Avenue overpass continues to raise concerns for homeowners after another vehicle crashed into a property last week.

Jerry Reese said the crash destroyed his fence and knocked down a light pole outside the home he rents.

“It knocked through my fence. Took that light pole out,” Reese said.

Residents say crashes have been a recurring problem along the roadway, where homes sit just feet from traffic traveling at high speeds.

Doreen Williams, Reese’s daughter, said the property has been hit multiple times.

“This is the sixth accident so far this year,” Williams said. “I’ve lived here four years. Just since February.”

Williams said the curve can be difficult to navigate because drivers coming around it may not see the roadway clearly and are often traveling too fast.

News4JAX previously reported on a crash at the same home four years ago. An older News4JAX report also documented another crash in the area nine years ago.

Some homeowners have taken steps to protect their properties. One home along the roadway has placed large boulders in the yard to help prevent vehicles from reaching the house. News4JAX reported that a vehicle crashed into that property in 2024.

Residents blame the roadway’s curvature for some of the crashes and say little has changed over the years.

The Florida Department of Transportation said it reviews crashes to determine whether anything could have prevented them. But residents say the repeated crashes have left them looking for their own solutions.

For now, fences, light poles and landscaping continue to bear the impact of vehicles leaving the roadway.
