JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 22-year-old Jacksonville man has been charged with murder after a deadly shooting Wednesday night during a pickup basketball game at Clanzel T. Brown Park, according to police.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said Charles Johnson Jr., 33, was found shot on Moncrief Road, and Jayden King was identified as the shooter.
Johnson died at the hospital, and King was quickly taken into custody about 4 miles from the park, police said.
Police said they initially responded just before 6 p.m. Wednesday to a reported shooting on Moncrief Road north of Golfair Boulevard near the Clanzel Brown Community Center.
When officers arrived, they found Johnson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Police say they learned a group at Clanzel T. Brown Park was playing basketball when the King and Johnson began arguing. They said King pulled out a firearm and shot Johnson repeatedly before leaving the scene on foot.
This comes just months after a 12-year-old was shot in the leg in July at the same park, also over an argument between two groups.
Less than six hours after a deadly shooting at a Moncrief park, the accused gunman is behind bars.
