Why today’s game matters

No. 10 Alabama faces its toughest test of the young season Saturday when the Crimson Tide host Florida State at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. Alabama enters the matchup unbeaten at 2-0 after convincing victories over East Carolina and Kentucky, while Florida State arrives at 1-1 after a narrow 27-24 loss to SMU.

The meeting marks one of the marquee nonconference games of Week 3 and provides both programs with an opportunity to strengthen their national standing heading into conference play.

Alabama has been dominant defensively through two games. The Crimson Tide are allowing 185.5 total yards and 13.5 points per game, including only 32.5 rushing yards per contest, one of the best marks in the nation. Freshman quarterback Keelon Russell has shown promise while throwing for 444 yards, and the running game has been led by Daniel Hill, who has rushed for 151 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Ryan Williams remains one of Alabama’s most explosive playmakers and gives the offense a home-run threat every time he touches the ball.

Florida State will look to lean on a powerful rushing attack led by Ousmane Kromah, who has rushed for 231 yards and two touchdowns through the first two games. Quarterback Ashton Daniels adds mobility and versatility, while Samuel Singleton Jr. has emerged as the Seminoles’ leading receiving threat. The concern for coach Mike Norvell’s team has been pass defense, as Florida State has allowed 351 passing yards per game entering Saturday’s matchup.

If Russell can continue to improve in Saturday’s matchup, the Crimson Tide could make a statement against the team that upset them last season.
