A former Salvation Army major for the East Stroudsburg Corps has been arrested in Florida on suspicion of sexual assault of children in Ohio.

According to the Tallahassee Democrat, part of the USA TODAY Network, James Allen Gingrich, 64, of Tallahassee, Florida, was arrested on Sept. 9 near his home after a 44-count indictment was issued against him on Aug 31. A Clark County, Ohio, grand jury indicted Gingrich, already a registered sex offender, on 41 counts of rape and three counts of attempted rape.

According to Gingrich’s Florida sex offender registration, he was placed on the registry for gross sexual assault and sexual battery.

According to the Tallahassee Democrat, Clark County Prosecutor Dan Driscoll told reporters during a Sept. 14 news conference that Gingrich had served as a major for the Salvation Army in Springfield, Ohio, and ran the corps’ taekwondo program. He alleged that Gingrich, who worked in Springfield from 1996 until 2009, “used his access to a number of minors through that taekwondo program to commit sexual assaults against many of those minors.”

In 2009, Gingrich transferred from Springfield to East Stroudsburg along with his wife, who was also a major at the East Stroudsburg Corps. Driscoll said that Gingrich moved to Tallahassee in 2020.

The East Stroudsburg Corps deferred comment on Gingrich’s latest charges to the Salvation Army’s regional office for eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware. The Pocono Record left a message with that office requesting comment. They had not returned the call as of 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 17.
