A three-year-old is dead in northwest Tallahassee after an apparent gunshot wound to the head on the morning of Nov. 9.

Javonni Hampton, a spokesperson with the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed the tragedy occurred in the 4200 block of Augustus Oak Court though it was not reported by the agency, which regularly releases incident alerts on Facebook and via press release.

“It’s just under investigation right now,” she told the Tallahassee Democrat.

She was not able to confirm if someone is in custody at this time. She said she couldn’t release the gender of the child. She could not say if the child was an intended target, if the shooting was an accident or self-inflicted.

She declined to provide any other details about the circumstances of the shooting.

The Democrat was alerted to the shooting by a member of the community. Hampton said no alert was issued about the shooting because of “the sensitivity of the situation” and they are awaiting the results of an autopsy.

“As more information becomes available we’ll be sure to provide that and be transparent with the community,” Hampton said.
