There are approximately one million Italian restaurants scattered across Tampa Bay, and most of them would very much like you to know they’re “authentic” while serving you something that would make a Milanese grandmother weep quietly into her risotto. So when a place actually has the credentials to back that claim up, it deserves your full attention.
Enter Luigi’s Kitchen.
If you’ve been paying close attention to South Tampa’s dining scene, this one isn’t entirely new. Luigi’s Kitchen was previously known as Trattoria Pasquale, which opened in 2012 and quietly built a devoted following along South Westshore Boulevard. (The name Trattoria Pasquale, for what it’s worth, was a tribute to Chef Luigi’s father, Pasquale Cavallaro, which is honestly one of the nicest things a person can do.) The same team also runs Tutto Tavola (6264 Winthrop Town Centre Ave) over in Riverview, which means these folks aren’t exactly stumbling through the Italian restaurant industry.

Chef Luigi Cavallaro was born and raised in Bolzano, Italy, and he takes the concept of authenticity seriously enough to travel back to Italy every single year with his partner Kim specifically to find new dishes. Not for a vacation. For research. The man is committed in a way that should embarrass the rest of us and our annual January resolutions that tend to collapse sometime around February 4th.
The rebrand to Luigi’s Kitchen brings the focus back to what this place has always done best: small, family-owned Italian dining with regional recipes, fresh ingredients, and zero shortcuts. The menu reads like a love letter to the Italian countryside, from house-made meatballs in pomodoro sauce to the Padellino Kampill, a penne dish with sautéed chicken, mushrooms, prosciutto, and a truffle oil finish that has absolutely no business being as good as it sounds.
But the undeniable highlight? The “Luigi at Your Table” experience, available every Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m. Chef Luigi himself rolls up to your table and prepares your pasta right in front of you. Choose from Linguini alla Puttanesca, Ravioli Principessa, or Penne Dolomiti. It’s dinner and dinner theater at the same time, and you don’t have to watch anyone do improv comedy. Everybody wins.
A complimentary house salad is included, and reservations are strongly recommended. Two-guest minimum, and you’ll both need to order the same pasta. Yes, that means agreeing on something first. Consider it a relationship exercise.
Luigi’s Kitchen is at 3671 South Westshore Boulevard in South Tampa. Reservations are available at here.
