PALM CITY, Fla. (CBS12) — Before an hours-long SWAT standoff in Palm City, a man allegedly threatened to kill himself and his ex-girlfriend after she went to his home to check on him following their breakup, a new report reveals.

According to an arrest report from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, the ex-girlfriend of the suspect, Darrel Abbey, arrived at his home at about 12:08 p.m. after the two had broken up the previous night. She told investigators Abbey was not doing well mentally and had previously made comments about killing himself.

When she arrived, Abbey had a rifle in his Tesla and a 10 mm handgun in his shorts, according to the report. The woman told investigators Abbey appeared to be extremely intoxicated.

The arrest report says Abbey brought both firearms inside the home and began screaming at the woman, “I should die, you should kill me,” while holding a gun. Investigators said Abbey continued yelling at the woman while recording the interaction on his phone.

The woman told investigators that Abbey pointed the gun at her several times and threatened to kill her and her stepfather.

At one point, Abbey allegedly placed the gun under his chin and pulled the trigger, but the firearm did not discharge because the magazine had been removed, according to the report.

Investigators said Abbey later began packing his vehicle. Fearing he was going to shoot her stepfather, the woman took the gun away from him, but Abbey allegedly continued reaching for it as she begged him to stop.

The report says that when Abbey picked up the gun again, he said, “This is really f***** dangerous now.” Investigators said Abbey continued drinking bourbon and Jameson throughout the encounter.

As Abbey walked outside, the woman told investigators she heard several loud “pop” sounds. Abbey then returned inside to retrieve a rifle and allegedly tried to get the woman to come outside and shoot it with him.

When she asked what he was shooting at, Abbey allegedly told her he had hung a bucket from a nearby tree and was shooting at it.

At some point during the incident, Abbey allegedly began cleaning the firearms and said, “I gotta wipe all my fingerprints off, I gotta get the gunshot residue off of my hands, I’m not going back to prison.”

The report says Abbey later attempted to get into his vehicle while continuing to drink, prompting the woman to begin recording him. Investigators who reviewed the video said Abbey appeared intoxicated while sitting in the driver’s seat, slurred his words and struggled to hold his head upright.

When Abbey realized the woman was recording, he allegedly reached for her phone. The woman then ran down the road until a passing motorist stopped to help her.

Deputies later attempted to contact Abbey at the residence, but he refused to open the door or speak with them, leading to an hours-long standoff involving the Martin County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team and hostage negotiators.

Abbey was booked into the Martin County Jail without bond on charges including battery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill. Investigators also said Abbey is a convicted felon from Washington state with a prior conviction for vehicular assault.
